Memorial Day: Remembering our Fallen Brothers

“The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.” -Thucydides

Today as you head out to the lake or fire up the grill for a backyard barbeque, keep in mind that Memorial Day is more than just a day off work or an opportunity to buy cars and furniture at discounted prices. It is a day of remembrance for the very real sacrifice that so many of our brothers and sisters have made in defense of our nation and in defense of each other.

We should all take at least a moment to reflect on the warriors who have fallen in battle- from the Revolutionaries of our War for Independence to the Civil War; from the young men mowed down in the trenches of France during WWI to the Marines and Soldiers who fell storming the beaches of Normandy and Iwo Jima; from the brave men who fought and died at the Battle of Pusan to the Americans killed in the jungles of Vietnam; from the Iraq War dead to the men and women still dying in the mountains of Afghanistan; from the dawn of our great nation to the present and every war, battle and skirmish in between.

Yes, the American Military has paid a high price in the blood of our young warriors. It is our duty to honor and remember them.

Today, as every day, my mind drifts to my brothers who are no longer with us. I will not list their names here, given the nature of this website, as I have no desire to politicize their sacrifice. But I will never forget them. None of us will.

So, please, in whatever way you see fit- a glass raised in a toast, a prayer or just a quite moment of reflection, let us honor these war fighters who have paid the ultimate cost. And please keep in your thoughts the families of the fallen as well, because for them, the war will never come to an end.

Though they may be gone from this earth, our brothers will live forever in our hearts and minds. Lest we forget….

Thank you for reading. Please have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.
